Type

• Type of wooden floor available in Malaysia. After making some research on all types you can choose the right type for your home depending on traffic and stress you are going to put on your floors.
• You can choose the traditional solid wood floor– parquet or 2’x10′, wood plank 95 mmx 18mm etc,  or latest technology like SPC flooring ( not real wood) or engineering wood (solid wood with wood system underneath).
• Categorized solid wood floor, there are many type you can choose. You can classify the wood floors depending on the material from which it is made, the layout process etc. If you categorize wood floors depending on the species/type, you will get mainly Merbau (Malaysia Local), Kempas ( mainly for small size i.e. 2″ x 12″), White Oak, walnut and Teak wood floors.

Depending on the flooring material formation, solid wood floor can also be classified in solid and engineered wood floors.

In solid wood floor, as the name refers- the floor is made up with solid pieces of timber.

• Engineered floors are made up with thin pieces of hardwood layers crisscrossed together. This type of flooring can withstand more stress due to this type of formation.
• Pure solid wood, whole wood piece  is solid wood, come in T&G, installation with batten or plywood underneath, with glue and nail.

Size

Depending on the material size, wood floors have types like- wood strips, wood planks and parquet flooring. Wood strips are long wood pieces with 50mm width, which normally is 10mm thickness. Planks are same as wood strips, but the only difference is in their width from 75mm (x 11mm thickness), 90mm, 95mm (x 15mm/ 18mm thickness) to 120mm (x18mm / 20mm thickness). Planks are less wide. Another popular wood floor type these days is parquet wood floor. In parquet wood flooring, wood pieces are forged into rectangular shapes.

Parquet flooring is famous for its strength and durability and easy repair-replace options. Old school type flooring but surprisingly it last more than 20 years.

Installation

There are different wood floor installation processes available. You can install the floor affixed to the sub-floor with nails or glues, also like floating wood floor instead of attaching it to the sub-floor, you can put an additional foam layer between the wood and sub-floor. Floating wood type mainly engineering wood. But we do put glue to stick it to floor. However compare solid wood, it is less glue when installation. But if you wanna remove it and use it back, this might not be a good idea and when the process of dismantling, the floor board will damage.

SPC Flooring

• SPC floor has the look of wood floor but actually is not.
• A thin layer of demographic paper exhibiting the wood grain is affixed tightly on a board.
• The main advantage of SPC wood floor is that it is cheaper, easy to install, less time consuming and moisture resistant. So can be easily installed on places where you can’t think of wood floor. SPC is Stone Plastic Composite panel, it is water proof on material, but if the floor is floor, the T&G area may not last and will break. 
• The advantage of it is the installation time is really short. for 1000sf, it can be done in 1 day. compare to solid wood may need 2-3 days.
